How MedTech Industry can contribute in decarbonizing healthcare?

MedTech Europe – European trade association for medical technology has recently published a comprehensive report on how competitive MedTech industry can begin decarbonising.

In the report, short-term actions are suggested while going beyond requires system change with MedTech companies, governments, the EU and notified bodies to achieve net zero.

Four categories of levers are suggested:

  • Cost-effective and feasible today, including from a technical, regulatory, and time perspective
  • Cost-effective but requiring the removal of some regulatory and/or other changes
  • Feasible but not economically viable today while challenging to implement with suppliers
  • Expensive while encountering regulatory blockers and/or other hurdles

Some important notes were also highlighted to better understand which issues are within the control of manufacturers. For example:

  • Only 5 to 10% are within the manufacturing and assembly of medical technologies at the end of the value chain – in other words within the direct control of medtech manufacturers.
  • Circularity in healthcare knows no one-size-fits-all: in the spirit of the 10-Rs Strategies for the Circular Economy, maximising the lifetime value of products while minimising the use of materials and resources and eliminating waste can have many different forms in the highly diverse MedTEch sector.
